  • Our Heritage

    Date gardens covering 24 acres were planted in 1917 in the Arcadia District west of the unincorporated village of Scottsdale and near the Ingleside Inn, with trees obtained by the Dept. of Agriculture from Arabia. In 1928, an unknown variety grown from a seedling was discovered in the Arcadia grove, the Black Sphinx Date. Convincing partners to grow a 47 acre grove, the Sphinx Dates became commercially available beginning in the 1940s. In 1951, Sphinx Date Ranch opened at 4737 Lafayette Boulevard (at 47th Street) in the Arcadia District. It included a restaurant, gift shop and a 47-acre date palm grove. A few years later, the property included guest cottages available by the week, month or season. In 1957, the original owners send date gifts to President Eisenhower and members of the U.S. Congress.
